The term "autobiography" first emerged in a somewhat derogatory context when William Taylor proposed it in 1797 as a linguistic fusion but criticized it as overly "pedantic."
However, its contemporary meaning was established shortly after, as seen in Robert Southey's use of the term in 1809. Even though the label "autobiography" emerged in the early 19th century, the practice of first-person autobiographical writing dates back to antiquity.
Roy Pascal distinguishes autobiography from the periodic self-reflective nature of journal or diary writing by highlighting that "[autobiography]" reviews an individual's life story from a particular point in time, while diaries, however introspective, chronicle a series of moments over time.
Therefore, autobiography offers a retrospective examination of the autobiographer's life journey, beginning at the moment of its composition.
